Name: Jessica Payne
Company: North City Farmers' Market
When did you feel the most BRAZEN, bold, or kick-ass?!
The moment I put in my letter of resignation at my longtime position in Chicago. I was leaving my corporate position to volunteer for a year (eventually two) as an AmeriCorps VISTA in St. Louis. It was terrifying but empowering all at the same time.
Tell us about a time in your business when you felt vulnerable and had to be brave.
Nearly every single day. Operating a farmers' market in a low-income neighborhood with few resources is a tough job. I am constantly questioning the path I've chosen for the season and whether it is the best fit for my neighbors. At some point, you just have to push forward and go for it and not be afraid to adjust mid-plan.
How have you broken the mold in your life or business?
Last year, the farmers' market lost all of its funding. We could have easily thrown in the towel, but instead, a group of neighbors stepped up to the plate to volunteer to help me keep the market going. We downsized and moved the market into our community garden, creating the only "harvest as needed" market in the city where shoppers get to experience where their food comes from.
What does being a BRAZEN Female Founder mean to you?
It means knowing that you are going to fail at some point and pushing ahead anyway with the knowledge that failure means learning and improving. It also means owning your mistakes without making excuses.
What makes you BRAZEN?!
I am typically quiet and observant, but when things need to be said, I will say them. I am not afraid to stand my ground and follow my own path.
